The weekend long Southwest Florida Birding and Wildlife Festival is held at Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve just north of Marco Island. Other options typically are trips to such places as Raccoon Point, a wild and diverse area of the Big Cypress Preserve not open to the general public. Raccoon Point is home to a variety of wildlife including several groups of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Other activities may include a swamp walk in the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park or finding burrowing owls on Marco Island. Visits to the Kirby Storter Boardwalk and a drive along nearby Turner River Road are also possibilities. For more information, Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center or call (239) 417-6310.
