Major Wildlife & Nature Events in March Visit Pelican Island NWR for its annual wildlife festival. This site is run by the Pelican Island Preservation Society. Look under PIPS Events for dates and details. Pelican Island was the first NWR is the entire U.S.! But it's sad. FWS does not maintain the Pelican Island site and it's up to PIPS volunteers. Roseate Spoonbills: See Florida's most colorful bird close-up. Nesting Brown Pelicans on mangrove islands along both coasts but especially Pelican Island NWR. Ding Darling NWR Wildlife Drive is excellent for birding though March. Everglades National Park at Homestead, Shark Valley and the 10,000 Islands sections are mosquito-free and with their best best wildlife viewing of the year.
