Roseates Move Into Central Florida

Although roseate spoonbills nest during winter in South Florida, the nesting season in Central Florida doesn't begin until April.

One of the best places in Central Florida to check out is Merritt Island NWR near Titusville. Check at the Visitor Center (closed Monday) on State Road 402 just east of Titusville.

In the Tampa Bay area, roseate spoonbills are nesting in the largest numbers counted since the 1800s. In recent years, 140 nesting spoonbills have been using two islands known as the Alafia Bank in Hillsborough Bay at the mouth of the Alafia River.

Both islands are Audubon sanctuaries and can be seen only from a distance. This is one of the largest concentrations of nesting roseate spoonbills in the entire state.
