The small Shark Valley Visitor Center contains educational displays, park video and info brochures. Books, postcards, and limited souvenirs also available. The visitor center has a small wooden observation platform beside the canal where gators, otters and wading birds are common. During winter’s early sunsets the park is still open. Set up a tripod on the observation platform or anywhere on the road beside the canal to photograph birds roosting in trees across the small channel. The sun will set behind them. The straight road paralleling the canal was built for oil exploration before this area became part of ENP. The canal has a large gator population with little fear of humans. Keep young children close. Gators, both large and small, laze everywhere around the road, not always readily obvious. Watch your step! Directions: From Miami, Shark Valley Visitor Center is located on Highway 41 (Tamiami Trail / SW 8th St.) 25 miles west of the Florida Turnpike, exit 25A (from the north) and exit 25 (from the south).
